Caring for your windows and doors
We build all vinyl components with inhibitors to reduce UV damage. Care is important, however, and it is important to inspect vinyl components every year for cracks and sun damage.
Inspect and clean vinyl components regularly
To clean vinyl components, use a mild solution of soap and water and a soft cloth or sponge. Do not clean them in direct sunlight—and do not let your soap solution dry on the components.
Rinse them thoroughly as soon as they’re clean and then dry them with a clean soft cloth. Before you clean vinyl components, vacuum all dirt in tracks and channels. Never use vinegar, citrus cleaners, paint removers or solvents and industrial cleaners on vinyl components.
Inspect all weather strips and screens
Make sure you inspect all weather-strips and screens regularly and replace damaged ones as soon as you notice a problem.
Proper maintenance will help prevent the elements getting into your window components and creating costly damage.
Maintain the hardware
Clean your hardware with a mild solution of soap and water and rinse well. Be careful what you use to clean them, as solvents and heavy cleaners will damage the coatings on hardware components.
Lubricate your windows annually using white grease, which protects against corrosion, and provides excellent lubrication; light oil, which can be used on sliding and rotating parts; and silicone spray, which can be used on sliding tracks and on weather strips. Always wipe off excessive lubricants.
